Back up ring is used for o-rings in high pressure application. High differential pressures will cause improperly specified O-rings to extrude, resulting in seal damage and eventually failure. The back up ring varies in different materials to withstand different pressure. The available materials are NBR, Viton, Aflas, PTFE, PEEK, Nylon, POM, etc.

O-Ring
O-ring is a solid rubber seal shaped like a ring or torus. The o-ring will block the passage of liquids or gases when compressed between mating surface. It is available in a wide range of standard sizes that are suitable for nearly all sealing application. Materials of O-ring require such characteristics as small compression set, better wear resistance, better oil resistance, and better heat resistance. Generally speaking, the nitrile rubber which has better oil resistance is used most widely but, depending upon applications, rubbers which are superior in heat resistance, chemical resistance, solvent resistance, and cold resistance are required.
